Getting removal quotes.
Start by getting several quotes from reputable companies in your area, check the free business index which provides independent reviews on removers in your area.
Most companies will supply a rough estimate at first then send somebody around to your property to undertake an official removal appraisal. Take your time and consider your quotes carefully, based on experience, reputation and your needs, don’t be rushed into making a decision there and then.
Word of caution:- Some Removals companies quote unrealistically low prices to get their foot in the door then hike up the quote upon a visit. The lowest price isn’t necessarily the best for your removal. Check independent reviews, reputation and experience before agreeing with any firm.
Booking the removal company.
Provisionally book the removal company. The date can normally be changed later if anything crops up and this is fairly standard in the removals industry. Check through their Terms & conditions and be sure that VAT is being added to the invoice if they claim that VAT is included in the price. Check the invoice for a VAT number otherwise they may be charging you VAT when they are not registered to do so, which is illegal.
Larger items to be moved.
Be sure to tell and the appraiser upon his visits about all your bulky items. Items in the loft, Basement and garage, including that grand piano that may need moving.
Don’t hide anything from them. Should on the day of the move large items to be moved suddenly appear without the removers prior knowledge, the removers may refuse to undertake the work and cancel the removal there and then, be clear, concise so there are no misunderstandings.
If you require storage services speak with your removers, they often have their own storage or can assist with getting some. At Smartmove Removals we work closely with our friends at The Big Yellow Storage company to offer our customers great deals on storage services.
Source boxes & tape.
Ask the removal company to supply boxes & tape and bubble wrap if required. At Smartmove Removals we provide Free packing material with all our moves as standard, however some companies will charge you for this or take a deposit. Check beforehand.

Dispose of unwanted items.
Start clearing out the garage & loft, hire a skip if necessary. Make a few trips to the recycling centre.
Notify utilities companies.
Be sure to notify your gas, electric, water, media provides before you moving so that you do not receive large bills or early cancellation bills that could if not paid create a bad credit report for you.
Setting up new utilities.
Make a list of the utilities you require in your new property and contact them as soon as you move in to get set up quickly.
Use professional tradesmen.
When setting up or removing your lights, washing machine, tumble dryer anything electrical or plumbing based always use professional qualified tradesmen. The same can be said for lock smiths, carpenters and builders. Do not request the removal company to undertake this work as usually they are not licensed to undertake this work and may do a bad job on it.
